EPIC Matters: Election Primer – Tuesday May 4th 2010 Edition

(EPIC Matters is for informational purposes only. Information posted does not reflect the views of EPIC Toledo or its membership.)

Be Informed! Vote!  The election on Tuesday May 4th has many issues and elections that are important to EPIC Toledo and Northwest Ohio residents.  There are two statewide issues (Issues 1 & 2), 6 local issues/levies (Issues 3 – 8), and many primaries.  We want to make sure that EPIC Toledo members are well informed so that we can use OUR collective voice to steer the future of our region, state, and country.  Below is a short description of the items on the May 4th ballot.

State and Local Issues

Issue 1: State Issue - PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO EXTEND THE OHIO THIRD FRONTIER PROGRAM BY AUTHORIZING THE ISSUANCE OF ADDITIONAL GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS TO PROMOTE ECONOMIC GROWTH

Issue 2: State Issue - PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO CHANGE THE LOCATION OF THE COLUMBUS CASINO FACILITY AUTHORIZED BY PREVIOUS STATEWIDE VOTE

The Ohio Secretary of State has a very good summary of the first two issues:  Ohio Issues Report

Issue 3: TOLEDO CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT - PROPOSED SCHOOL DISTRICT INCOME TAX (NEW) – 0.75% Toledo Resident Income Tax

Issue 4: SPRINGFIELD LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT - PROPOSED TAX LEVY (ADDITIONAL) - 3.9 mills (39 cents for each $100 of property valuation)

Issue 5: City of Toledo PROPOSED REALLOCATION OF ¾ PERCENT TEMPORARY INCOME TAX - Eliminates any revenue being allotted to the Capital Improvement Fund and places it in the General Fund

Issue 6: City of Oregon Police Tax Renewal - PROPOSED TAX LEVY (RENEWAL) - 0.5 mills (5 cents for each $100 of property valuation)

Issue 7: Richfield Fire Tax Renewal - PROPOSED TAX LEVY (RENEWAL) - 2.50 mills (25 cents for each $100 of property valuation)

Issue 8: Swanton Village Electric Load - PROPOSED ELECTRICAL AGGREGATION – Would allow the Village of Swanton to sell and buy electricity to businesses and residents in Swanton

See a broader explanation of the issues.
